To coincide with my weekly "What We're Reading" series, I've got a Christmas gift idea in the form of some books.
The Monkey Wellbeing series was developed by ex-teacher Helen Sadler after she discovered that there weren't any age appropriate health and wellbeing information for younger children.
The series is very effective in preparing children for key life events. The books encourage discussion between the child and parent and the honest telling of the story helps them to understand new experiences.
The character being a Monkey is a great idea. C loves monkeys and took to him quite well. He wanted to listen to the stories and discover what Monkey was doing. The books are written through the eyes of a child and they help reduce children's anxieties about things like having an operation or a blood test.
I think these books are a great resource for parents too. It makes it easier for parents to reassure and comfort their child using the materials rather than trying to explain it themselves and maybe worrying children more.
The Monkey Wellbeing series includes storybooks (Monkey Has Asthma, Monkey has an Operation, Monkey has a Blood Test, Monkey Goes to School, Monkey Visits Grandpa in Hospital, Monkey Has an Injection), Monkey's Guide to Healthy Living & the NHS Services, Monkey Visits the Emergency Department activity guide, Monkey puppet & NHS explorer's sticker sets.
These books would make a lovely gift for Christmas or even as a stocking filler as they seem a little brochure-like but I think I prefer that as C tends to drop and damage hardbacked books.
The storybooks retail at £2.95 each. Also available to buy are activity guides, accessories and packs. Prices for these very but you can find out all the information at the online shop.
